The Plastics Group
Hang Tags
Briggs & Stratton (B&S) Marketing was approached by The Plastics Group (TPG) with the interest in a partnership to sell their line of fuel cans. They bought the limited rights to use the B&S name on all their products. TPG also wanted a redesign of the hang tags used to promote and price the fuel cans. B&S Graphic Services was given the opportunity and the designer's hang tag concept was chosen by TPG to begin refining and then final production. The designer was in charge of project management, worked closely with TPG on the final designs and art directed the photography of the 15 plus fuel cans/products in TPG production. During initial meetings with TPG it was determined that they wanted some sort of adhesive label that could be peeled off the hangtag. The label would mark what mix ratio of oil to gas a particular fuel can would contain. Many outdoor power equipment users have several applications, (i.e., string trimmer, chainsaw, lawnmower) that all have separate fuel requirements. The labels would be an added convenience for the consumer and another selling point for the fuel cans. The designer contemplated their idea as the meeting went on and considered the production cost and efficiency of the label idea. Production cost of the hang tags would go up and the issue of adhesiveness on the textured and soon to be used/dirty fuel cans would also pose future problems. After a convenient break in the conversation the designer revisited the label idea, expressed his concerns and offered an alternative that also could be considered. TPG immediately expressed interest in the designer's idea which is shown below and which was used in the final production of the hang tags.

Quite simply the consumer would flip over the hangtag, cut at the dotted line and then could reuse the tag to write down the fuel ratio and what application it was used for. This feature/selling point was a first of its kind and helped TPG's products stand out from the competition.

Since the Wedco name was still brand worthy in Canada TPG requested a Wedco version of the hang tag be produced as well.
